King’s Jester is an underground classic poker game that has been around for a while. It’s actually one of the few (if not the only) variations of Texas Holdem that are purely based around skill. You basically roll a four-suit die and take turns trying to make your opponent discard cards. It’s quite simple, but it can be very challenging to master.
The thing about Kings Jester that makes it so good, however, is that the strategy involved actually promotes thinking out your strategy. In a traditional game like Texas Holdem, where all you’ve got to worry about is calling and having a strong hand, sometimes it can seem more like luck than skill. With Kings Jester, you’re given three cards to review — and then you have to figure out what you’re going to do with them. If you get all your cards right, you win; if you get one card wrong, you lose.
It’s easy to learn the tricks of the trade, but the true reward comes when you’re bluffing your way to a win. This is where King’s Jester shines. Because you know your opponent is holding three good cards, you know exactly what to do with the last two cards — and you can make any of those three cards into the best hand in the room (or just the strongest hand). It’s definitely an excellent bluffing game, and if you want a good, tense game, it’s the kind of game you’re looking for.
